Tunisia: Plan to promote organic farming

A plan to promote organic farming is being implemented in the region of Kairouan, in particular, to increase the overall area of organic crops to 7 thousand ha in late 2009. The plan is initiated by the regional commision of agricultural development. The introduction of crops under organic standards began in 2003 in the region. Currently these crops cover about 3540 hectares. An awareness campaign on the merits of organic farming and its promise is being conducted in collaboration with the Regional Unions of Agriculture and Fisheries.
The trees, including olive branch is the easiest to integrate into a system of organic production, because it consumes, in general, small quantities of chemical fertilizers and requires rarely pesticides. There are, in the region, 157 thousand ha of olive groves and 212 thousand ha of various fruit trees.
These first organic vegetable crops in the region have helped to produce and distribute four tons of organic peppers, during the same campaign.
